Object relational mapping tools are designed to encapsulate database access within a layer that maps database tables and columns to objects and attributes. Along the way, some nifty optimizations like data caching and automagic updating are available. Some products in this category are:

• Toplink - owned currently by Oracle and is the leader in category
• Cayenne - an open source alternative
• Entity EJBs - which provide a simple mapping capability via CMP and occasionally cache data, but are usually weak in querying capability.
